Elizabeth had a camera from an early age, including at the National Woman’s Party Headquarters in 1918 – 1921. Sadly, those pics were not saved.

These pictures are from her 1921-1923 travels around California. First she and her mom went up into the mountains outside Los Angeles. Then, they bought a car and went to Big Basin Redwoods, the City Auto Camp at Emeryville, and the desert surrounding Palm Springs. (Riding breeches are wonderful — they give women something to wear for hiking!) See California Cruising with Elizabeth for her warm and funny account of their adventures.

Elizabeth experienced the joy of cabin camping in the San Gabriel Mountains,
a “stage” (bus) ride from Los Angeles.
With a Model T, nicknamed Junior, Elizabeth and her mother chose
many new paths and places!

In summer/fall 1923, Elizabeth and her mother took her grandmother on a trip around California. Here she is examining the snakeskin that Elizabeth was given at Snow Canyon.
